Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued at various times Monday afternoon for Wake, Hoke, Moore and Cumberland counties, among others, as the line of storms moved across the region. By 6:30 p.m., the line of storms had moved off to the southeast at 50 to 65 mph.

Downed trees were reported in Cary, Fuquay-Varina and Garner in Wake County; Benson in Johnston County; Goldsboro in Wayne County; and Raeford in Hoke County. Wind gusts of 64 mph were recorded at the Fayetteville airport; winds also toppled the steeple at Hope Christian Church along Hazelwood Avenue in Fayetteville. A possible tornado was spotted near Chadbourn in Columbus County.
Duke Power initially reported outages for about 18,000 customers as a result of the storm. Progress Energy reported 2,800 homes without power in Wake County and another 3,400 in Moore County. Power crews were working to restore power to the affected areas Monday evening.
