Teen Charged With Shooting 3-Year-Old

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Durham police investigators filed charges Friday against 19-year-old Mark Antonio Johnson in connection with the June 18 wounding of a 3-year-old girl on Gray Avenue.

Johnson is charged with discharging a weapon into occupied property (a vehicle) and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He had not been arrested by Friday evening.

The 3-year-old child, Stacey McDonald, was sitting inside a maroon Pontiac Grand Am in the parking lot at 208 Gray Avenue when she was shot shortly before 1 a.m. on June 18. Her mother, Lashawnda Cross, suffered minor injuries from glass fragments from a shattered car window. Stacey was released from the hospital earlier this week.

Investigators believe the shot was intended for Ms. Cross's boyfriend, who was getting in the car when the shot was fired. Investigators have not determined a specific motive, but believe the shooting may have been a result of an ongoing argument.

Anyone with information on Johnson's whereabouts is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 683-1200 or Investigator M.E. Harris at 560-4440, ext. 236. CrimeStoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,200 for information leading to an arrest.
