RDU INTERNATIONAL, N.C. — Officials at

RDU International

call the creation of Terminal C an investment in the Raleigh-Durham area. Friday marks the first day of the $430 million project.

Officials said when the new terminal is complete, it will be the primary aviation center at RDU.

"First and foremost will be our commitment to customer service because that is our vision and mission -- to be the best airport in the world known for uncompromising service to our customers," said Steve Toler, director of the Airport Authority.

The new Terminal C should be completed by 2008. When it is complete, it will have 20 new gates, flights for Delta, USAirways, Continental and Northwest Airlines.

Airport officials said it will also be one of the first terminals with most of the post-9/11 security features.

There are also plans to renovate Terminal A in order to keep up with the new technology for Terminal C.
