Slain Teen Remembered As Investigators Build Case Against Shooting Suspects

"Today has been a solemn day," said Warren Middle School Principal Danylu Hundley. "But I think the students have handled the stress of the day very, very well."

The 13-year-old died early Saturday morning when a bullet struck him as he sat in the back seat of his family's sport utility vehicle. They were returning from a party and preparing to turn into their driveway when a second vehicle approached them.

Several shots were fired into the SUV. Investigators said the shooting was random.

"(It) was just a case of individuals who went out and shot at vehicles," said Warren County Sheriff Johnny Williams.

Five people are now in custody in Virginia awaiting extradition back to Warren County, including the alleged triggerman, 25-year-old Michael Cotman.

All are charged with first-degree murder.

Williams said the weapon, an AR-15 automatic assault rifle, was recovered from a ravine in Virginia. Another key piece of evidence in the case came from a written statement by two of the suspects who turned themselves in to authorities.

"It implicated the shooter and the role that everybody played," Williams said.

Davis' funeral will be held on Friday at Warren County Middle School.
