Michael May, 24, was traveling westbound on
N.C. Highway 70
between Vandora Springs Road and Yeargan Road when his 2002 Mercedes collided with a 2000 Chevrolet van.
Police said the excessive speed, coupled with the wet conditions, caused both vehicles to spin out of control.
"We are estimating his (May's) speed at around 100 miles per hour," said Lieutenant Bob Stevens, of the Garner Police Department's Accident Reconstructionist and supervisor for the Department's Traffic Safety Team.
May was ejected from the car. Rescue workers rushed May to WakeMed in Raleigh where he died from what police believe were injuries sustained during the accident.
The driver of the van, 37-year-old Leon Smith, was not injured, authorities said.
Westbound Highway 70 was completely shut down as authorities worked to clear the scene. One eastbound lane was also closed.
