Nine-Year-Old Boy Injured In Car Accident

Posted Updated

CLAYTON — A 9-year-old boy is in the hospital after a car accident at his home.

Sheriff's deputies say the boy was mowing and wanted to move a car out of the way. Deputies believe he put the car in the wrong gear, and it slammed into the side of the house.

The boy was seriously hurt when the air bags deployed.

"When my wife got to him, she thought he was dead because he wasn't moving, just laying there," says homeowner Leonard Smart. "His eyes sunk back in his head, but I believe the airbags with all the dust and smoke kind of burned his eyes."

The boy is listed in guarded condition at WakeMed. Air bags can deploy at speeds of 250 to 300 miles an hour in a fraction of a second.
