, a provider of wireless services based in San Diego, is buying wireless spectrum in 13 Carolinas markets.
Leap said Tuesday it would pay $31.8 million in cash for the spectrum that is held by Urban Comm-North Carolina, which is in bankruptcy. The purchase must be approved by a federal bankruptcy court and the Federal Communications Commission.
Leap already offers services in Charlotte and Greensboro under the product names Cricket and Jump.
Spectrum in North Carolina covers the Asheville-Hendersonville, Burlington, Goldsboro-Kinston, Greenville-Washington, New Bern, Raleigh-Durham, Roanoke Rapids and Rocky Mount-Wilson markets.
South Carolina markets include Florence, Myrtle Beach, Orangeburg, Sumter, and Charleston.
