Mystery Man Who Prompted School Lockdown Turns Out To Be 11-Year-Old

WILSON, N.C. — A suspicious man -- who later turned out to be an 11-year-old -- prompted a school lockdown in Wilson.

On Thursday, a couple of Wells Elementary students reported that they saw a man in the woods near the school.

The students said he looked like he was carrying a weapon. That prompted a lockdown and a search of the school grounds.

When authorities questioned the students more, they learned the man was actually an 11-year-old, who got into an argument with some children. During the incident, the 11-year-old displayed an item, which some students thought was a weapon.

Authorities said there was not a weapon after all.

The school was on lockdown for about an hour.
