Local Universities' Athletes Also Scoring In The Classroom

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Bragging rights are on the line for schools on Tobacco Road, but this has nothing to do with basketball or football. North Carolina, Duke and N.C. State received grades on how athletes are doing in the classroom.

The NCAA released the Academic Progress Rates, or APRs, on Wednesday. Teams are graded on athletes staying in school and remaining academically eligible. Using a special formula, 1,000 is a perfect score, but 925 is the set target.

That target was hit by all but three sports in the Triangle. Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State teams can all put the points on the board.

When it comes to the Academic Progress Report, UNC and Duke score near the top of their class. Both schools put up impressive numbers. In basketball, Carolina racked up 989 points, while Duke had 978.

The Tar Heels and the Blue Devils also did well when it comes to the gridiron. The UNC football team came in at 943 points, while Duke had 975.

N.C. State's teams are scoring on the field and on the hardcourt, but came up short in the APRs. The football team squeaked by with 933 points. The basketball team came up short with 922, but there won't be any penalties. The NCAA is giving them a bye due to a squad-size adjustment.

Aside from N.C. State's basketball team; Wolfpack wrestling and Carolina's men's golf team failed to meet the deadline. None of the programs face any type of penalty.

However, East Carolina University's men's basketball team didn't fare well, and is now one of 99 teams facing punishment from the NCAA, including scholarship penalties.
