West Nile Virus May Spread Further In North Carolina This Year

RALEIGH — If you have been spending a lot of time outdoors,you probably already know that mosquitos seem to be everywhere.

The increase in mosquito activity this spring has healthofficials concerned about a larger outbreak of the West Nile Virus in the state this year.

Last year, the virus reached Chatham County.

West Nile is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause inflammationof the brain. Most people who are infected show no symptoms or may have amild fever and headache, but the virus can be deadly.

West Nile came from Africa and West Asia and was first discovered inthe United States last summer in New York City.

Seven people died there and another died in New Jersey earlier this year.
