Southern Pines Gears Up For 2001 U.S. Women's Open

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — Plans for the2001U.S. Women's Openare swinging into action.

At Pine Needles in Southern Pines, theleaderboard is up and final preparations arebeing made to thecourse. More than 2,500 volunteers have signedup to work at the tournament.

The event is expected to pump more than $50 million into the economy and breakattendance records with 115,000 spectators.

"So far, people have responded tremendously.We're really in the final stages, but we'restill hoping we can get people out to experiencegolf," says Kelly Miller, general manager of Pine Needles.

The 2001 U.S. Women's Open runs from May 28 to June 3.Tickets and local hotel rooms are still available.
