Two Arrested In Dogfighting Ring Bust

Posted Updated

ENFIELD, N.C. — Two people have been arrested and three pit bulls are at a Halifax County animal shelter after a sheriff's deputy unexpectedly broke up a dogfighting ring.

A tip led authorities to a dogfighting ring behind a house in Enfield, where a pit bull fight was about to begin.

Dozens of dog owners abandoned their cars, grabbed their dogs and ran into a nearby wooded area when they realized arrests were about to be made.

Authorities believe at least five other animals were taken by their owners when they ran into the woods.

Brian Bartholomew, 24, of Enfield, and Derrick Terry, 33, of Rocky Mount were charged with participating in a dogfight, which is a felony in North Carolina.

Marijuana was found inside Bartholomew's house, as well as performance-enhancing drugs, IV packs and scales -- all part of the deadly sport.

Authorities also seized about 12 vehicles, as well as shotguns and a stolen motorcycle.
