Durham Day Care Remains Closed Due to Teacher Protest

Teachers walked off the job Friday to protest the firing of the director of the YMCA's Early Learning Center.

Monday morning, teachers were in front of the YMCA to show support for Karenne Berry, the ousted director. Those teachers said they will not return until the director is rehired.

The YMCA has said Berry will not be reinstated. Some teachers say they are willing to return to work, but the center will remain closed through the week, possibly reopening next Monday.

One parent, Daniel Bossut, had not heard the day care center would be closed, and he drove up ready to drop off his child.

"It is a problem," he said. "We are paying for it, so I don't feel good about it."

Teacher Tanwa Roberts said the staff is not getting any information.

The NAACP is said to be monitoring developments.

Berry says she plans to file a grievance with the YMCA.
