Severe Weather Rattles Nerves, Does Little Damage

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Damage from Sunday morning's severe weather was minimal around the area. Winds were strong, but no tornadoes were reported.

High winds knocked over power lines across the Triangle. About 4,000 people were still without power Sunday afternoon, mainly in Durham and Orange counties.

A slew of tornado warnings were issued in early Sunday morning, but no major damage was immediately reported.

Before the storm hit, foggy conditions made driving difficult. Police responded to dozens of minor accidents.

The weather may have played a role in a fatal accident on the outer Beltline between Rock Quarry and Hammond roads in Raleigh.

Julio Corea died in the crash. Claudio Palacios is in stable condition. Another person was injured, but their identity has not been released.
