Believing the children were in immediate danger, theN.C. Division of Child Developmentshut down the home-operated Kathy's Day Care, which is located in the 500 block of Hunter Street.
Kathy and Barry Wood operated the business out of their Durham home since 1992. After investigating a neglect and abuse complaint, the state requested that the Woods undergo a drug test. The results revealed a high level of cocaine.
A Crimestoppers tip alerted Durham police that the owners of the day care might be using drugs. Police conducted a search of the home Wednesday night, finding drug paraphernalia and a trace amount of what is believed to be a controlled substance.
Durham police are also looking into the death of a 7-week-old baby at the home in November. The Woods told police they found the girl not breathing in the crib.
The day care was certified for up to 12 children. Up until Wednesday, Kathy's Day Care had an unblemished record and a four-out-of-five star rating from the state.
