Tractor-Trailer Collides with Johnston County Bridge Support; 1 Dead

Posted Updated

JOHNSTON COUNTY — A tractor-trailer overturned in Johnston County Monday afternoon, causing traffic hassles for motorists on Interstate 95.

The tractor-trailer ran into a bridge support at the Parkertown Road bridge near Four Oaks at mile marker 84. Traffic was backed up for miles for about three hours. The bridge is closed to traffic.

Two people were pinned in the cab of the tractor-trailer. They were later pulled out of the vehicle and transported by LifeFlight helicopters.

The driver, Samuel Harvin III, of Rocky Mount, is in stable condition at Duke University Medical Center. His passenger, 29-year-old Reco Lowman, later died from his injuries.

The wreck also caused the trailer to spill more than 150 gallons of diesel fuel. Hazardous material crews worked into the night to clear the scene.

Officials plan to return Tuesday morning to determine the damage to the bridge.
