Former Durham Mayor In Hot Water Over Rental Properties

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Some Durham leaders will have to decide how to handle one of their own.

Chester Jenkins, director of Durham's Human Relations Department and former mayor, is in hot water over his rental properties, which the city wants to tear down. The problem is Jenkins heads the department that handles many housing complaints.

Durham's Human Relations Commission will talk about Jenkins' fate Tuesday.

"I am highly concerned about the conditions of the property the conditions that tenants were allowed to live in because I'm an advocate, and I'm trying so hard to eliminate that," says Durham councilwoman Jackie Wagstaff. "It's hard when you have to fight within your own department."

Commissioners will make their recommendation to the city manager.
