RALEIGH — Wake County is dealing with a recount of its own.Board of Electionsstaffers and volunteers were busy processing 20,000 provisional ballots -- votes held in limbo.
Voters fill out provisional ballots when they are not listed on a precinct list because they neglected to update their registration or their registration date went astray.
"A provisional ballot is a person who says they have registered to vote, but we cannot find them in our books, we cannot find them in our lists on Election Day, or in the computer, but they know they have voted [in the past] " says Connie Mitchell of the Wake County Board of Elections.
If elections workers can confirm voter registration, the vote is counted.
The fate of at least three elections hang in the balance: In the District 4 county commissioner's race, Kenn Gardner leads Democratic incumbent Yevonne Brannon by 3,662 votes. Republican Kris Bailey leads by 3,066 votes against Democrat Fred Morelock in the race for Wake District Court Judge. The District 61 race between Republican Art Pope and Democrat Jack Nichols is up in the air, with Pope leading by 658 votes.Elections officials say it is unlikely that the provisional count will change the outcome of these races.
