Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski is used to being surrounded by young talent. Artwork from six Durham students will grace this year's Duke Children's Hospital holiday cards. Megan Kerns is one of the artists, and she was surprised to learn her drawing of an angel was chosen.
"I couldn't believe I'd won," she says. "I was in shock for like five minutes. I was really surprised."
The holiday card program helps fund a summer camp for sick kids. Coach K. hopes Triangle families will make the cards part of their holiday tradition.
"It's the most beautiful thing for kids drawing these sketches and [the drawings] becoming cards and raising money," he says. "It's the full loop of kids helping kids. It's very special."
Printing costs were donated by local businesses. So when you buy a $10 package of cards, every penny goes toward helping sick children at Duke.
The hospital hopes to raise at least $50,000 by selling the greeting cards. The cards can be purchased at Harris Teeter, Coastal Federal Union and the Duke University Credit Union.
