Saturday night, Raleigh police caught a man speeding near Glenwood and Wade Avenues. Soon after, they pulled over Michael Talley, principal ofMillbrook High School.
Talley was charged with DWI. His blood alcohol content (BAC) was 0.09 -- just above North Carolina's legal limit of 0.08. Police say he had apparently run a red light before being pulled over.
The Wake County School System says Talley has been granted administrative leave with pay pending a personal review. Assistant Principal David Rockefeller will handle Talley's duties until further notice.
Talley, who is in his first year as principal of Millbrook High School, has been employed by the school system since 1974.
Talley began his career as a teacher at Sanderson High School and has also served as assistant principal at Martin Middle and Broughton High. He was appointed principal at Lacy Elementary in 1992 and at Martin Middle in 1996.
Students were surprised of the news.
"I feel that's not acceptable for a principal of a high school. If he is trying to set an example of no drinking and no drugs at school, you can't stand by that," says student Marc Munichman.
WRAL was not allowed to speak to members of the school's Students Against Drunk Driving chapter.
Talley's arrest marks another event in a rough year at Millbrook.
In April, the body of studentUsama Huseinwas found shot to death in a ditch near his home. Detectives have not been able to solve the case, but as the investigation progressed, five assault weapons were discovered that were owned by former and current Millbrook high school students.
