Protesters Want Write-in Votes Counted

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Rarely do opposing political parties pair up just before an election, but it happened Saturday in Raleigh.

The Green Party and the Libertarian Party marched side by side along Hillsborough Street. Their goal is to bring attention to the issue of write-in votes not being counted in many North Carolina counties.

Many of the candidates they support are not printed on this year's ballot and must be written in.

"Historically, some counties counted third-party write-in votes and some did not," says protest organizer Chris Busby. "It seems to be up to the board of elections in each individual county."

Saturday's protesters are also engaged in a letter-writing campaign to their counties, asking the boards of elections to count write-in votes.
