500 Raise Money for Diabetes Research

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — The search for a Diabetes cure got a boost Saturday.

Fundraisers gathered at Umstead State Park in Wake County for America's Walk for Diabetes.

More than 500 people showed up to raise money for diabetes research.

WRAL's Lynda Loveland was the honorary chairman for the walk.

And 2-year-old Caleb Darr was the junior chairman. He was diagnosed with diabetes right after his first birthday. He is the youngest person in North Carolina to wear an insulin pump.

"It's been overwhelming for our family," said Becky Darr, Caleb's mother. "It's been a really rough year. It means more to us then we can even say to have people come out and find a cure for Caleb."

Walkers raised almost $85,000 Saturday.

Nearly 16 million people in the U.S. are diabetics. It is the seventh leading cause of death, and there is no cure.
