Tens of thousands of golf fans are expected to make their way to Southern Pines this week for the U.S. Women’s Open at the Pine Needles Golf Club.
The golf course might be quiet now, but it’s ready – perfectly trimmed, shaped and molded for the tour. The last time the women’s open landed in Pine Needles, it was 2001. Players come from all over the world to compete.
“There’s a very large international contingent, both in terms of the players in the field and the media as a result who are covering them. And you’ll see that throughout the week,” said Beth Murrison, with the U.S. Golf Association.
In previous years, crowds have topped the 100,000 mark, which is just one reason the tour keeps coming back.
“This is the third time we’ve been here in 11 years, and I really think that speaks to about how much the USGA enjoys coming here – but certainly the players as well, how welcome we feel coming here,” Murrison said.
