N.C. State Student Speaks Out About Being Shot At Campus ATM

Rob Baumgart knows his story could have had a very different ending.

"I didn't see a gun, but I saw this flash," he says. "I'm just thanking God that I am still alive."

The N.C. State sophomore was standing at the campus ATM. He says the suspect approached him as he was getting in his car, asked for directions and then shot him in the face.

"That was probably the scariest moment of my life, just sitting there," he says. "I want to grow old and gray one day, and here I am not going to have that chance. That's what I was thinking."

Baumgart only spent the night in the hospital, but the bullet that went through his cheek is still lodged in the back of his neck. He says the hardest part of the shooting has been the toll it has taken on his family.

"When my mom came to the hospital, she just put her arms around me. Just bawling her eyes out," he says.

Even though it may take him a while to recover, Baumgart says he is determined to move on.

"Those thoughts of leaving vanished fairly fast. I do love N.C. State. I feel safe here," he says.
