Raleigh Planners Want Greater Control Over Retail Growth Areas

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — You could call it a battle of roads versus retail. Right now, retail is winning.

Raleigh city planners say they want to change that by having greater control over five retail areas in town that have exceeded the city's growth expectations.

Areas where planners want better control of retail growth include:
  1. Crabtree Valley Mall
  2. Lynn Road at Millbrook Road
  3. Wake Forest at Falls of Neuse Road
  4. Spring Forest at Falls of Neuse Road
  5. Capital Boulevard at New Hope Church Road

Some shoppers question the timing of this idea.

"The growth is already fairly phenomenal, so as far as cracking down on it, controlling growth at this point, it seems like a little bit too late," says Mike Orkiszewski.

To better control growth in these problem areas, the Raleigh planning commission recommends that commissioners review all site plans. Currently, the city administration reviews the site plans.

The public is invited to speak out on the issue.

The Raleigh City Council will hold a public hearing Tuesday, January 18 at the Avery Upchurch Government Complex on Hargett Street. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.
