Travelers Urged to Avoid I-77 Near Virginia Border Over Holiday Weekend

Posted Updated

MOUNT AIRY (AP) — State highway officials say Labor Day drivers should avoid Interstate 77 near the Virginia border. The interstate has only one lane in each direction for several miles because of repairs to the concrete surface.

Motorists are urged to take a 30-mile detour on I-40 and U-S 52 through Winston-Salem that will save hours of sitting in traffic.

An expected one-point-one (M) million holiday drivers are expected in North Carolina over the long weekend.

The state Highway Patrol plans to put additional troopers on the road for the holiday.
