JACKSONVILLE (AP) — State scientists brought in some heavy equipment this week in their continuing efforts to restore marine life to polluted areas of Wilson Bay on the New River.
Tuesday, a marine scientist fromN.C. State Universityhelped tow three aluminum aerator devices to the bay near the old Jacksonville waste treatment plant.
That same day, 170,000 sediment-filtering oysters and other shellfish were planted in the bay to help clean up the water.
Environmentalists are hoping the two techniques prove successful in removing the sludge and debris at the bottom of the bay while supplying oxygen to a part of the waterway that scientists say is dead.
The efforts are part of the Wilson Bay Initiative.
