Deaf School Teacher Charged With Sexual Abuse Enters Plea

Posted Updated

GREENSBORO (AP) — A former teacher at the Central North Carolina School for the Deaf has pleaded guilty to three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

In exchange for the plea, prosecutors agreed to drop charges accusing Johnnie David Cox of sexually abusing a 15-year-old student at the school.

The plea agreement was reached Tuesday morning, shortly before jury selection was scheduled to begin in Cox's trial.

Cox received a 45-day suspended jail sentence on each of the misdemeanor counts. He'll serve two years on supervised probation, during which he may not teach children or be in the presence of anyone under the age of 18 without supervision.

Cox was charged in May 1999 after an eighth-grade student at the school said Cox had kissed and fondled her on several occasions in 1998.
