Raleigh Police Bust Stolen Furniture Ring

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Raleigh police have busted a stolen furniture ring. The suspects managed to make off with nearly $250,000 without ever stepping foot inside a store.

A truck full of mattresses was the latest in a string of furniture store robberies in Cary and Raleigh since last year. Twelve stores were robbed, including Jones Brothers, Ethan Allan and Rooms to Go.

The thieves stole everything from nightstands and mattresses to bedroom sets.

Police arrested John Alan Kinlaw and Ian Pierce. They were charged with several counts of breaking and entering and larceny.

Lt. Mathias of the Raleigh Police Department says the thieves actually stole the trailers which stored the new furniture.

Police say the thieves stole a Sealy trailer from behind the Jones Brothers store Thursday. When police found it half-empty, they decided to set a trap.

"The guy came back to the truck to get some more off of it, and that's when they caught him," says store owner Randy Jones.

The thieves had unloaded most of the mattresses at a storage company. Jones recovered his whole load.

"I don't even have any idea why someone would hook to a trailer that's 48 feet long and think they could drive it off and keep it and hide it anyway, but that's up to them," Jones says.

Police are still identifying some of the furniture. So far, they have recovered about $75,000 worth of furniture.
