Many centers have been working on getting a star-rated license for months. So far, more than 600 facilities have received the new rating. More than 1,000 other centers have applied.
The state hopes the new system will help parents make more informed choices.
"I think that has been confusing. With the old system, it wasA and AA," says day care owner Emily Strong. "I think with one to five stars, it is going to make it clearer for parents."
Day care owner Kathy Miller is also pleased about the new rating system.
"It has raised the visibility with the teachers because we have talked more about the things that are on the rating scale so it has generally improved the program," Miller says.
The deadline for centers to apply voluntarily is September 1. After that, centers that do not will automatically receive a one star rating.
