RALEIGH — A tight budget means cutbacks for theWake County Department of Human Services.
The department is looking for $6.2 million in savings. Half of those savings will come through normal job attrition and freezing job vacancies.
To make up for cuts in programs, patients will be referred to other health care providers in the county.
"Many of these things we would have probably done anyway in time," says Wake Human Services operations director Bob Sorrels. "But given the urgency of the budget situation this fiscal year, we're having to move up some of these strategies right away."
The Northern Wake Clinic and the Crosby Clinic may also be closed to make up for the budget shortfall.
Here are some other areas to be eliminated or reduced: The Adolescent/Women's Clinic will be converted into a family planning/pregnancy prevention clinic. WIC will no longer be open after business hours. Breast and cervical cancer detection services, as well as the mammography program, would be eliminated, possibly shifting toRex Healthcare.The final list of cutbacks and eliminations is due August 10.
