Former National Guard Member Arrested For Making Pipe Bomb

Sgt. Milton Cooper of the Warren County Sheriff's Office says he knew something was up when he saw a black Ford Escort in a wooded area. The car contained a pipe bomb.

"The vehicle was backed into the treeline as far as it could get with pine needles on top," Cooper says. "There was also some camouflage netting draped over the top of the vehicle so whoever parked the vehicle there went through a lot of trouble to make sure it was not discovered."

The car and the bomb were traced to 21-year-old Muhsin Abdin. Investigators say he may have gotten some of his bomb materials from the local National Guard where he was an active member until recently.

Investigators arrested Abdin at the home he shared with his mother. He was found hiding under the bed. Investigators also found a shotgun and a dismantled Chinese assault rifle on top of the bed.

Abdin's mother says she had no idea that her son had any weapons. She says she believes her son was just experimenting with the bomb. The Warren County Sheriff's Office disagrees.

"Someone who had this amount of explosive material had the intentions of doing something illegal," says Johnny Williams of the Warren County Sheriff's Office.

Abdin is being held at the Warren County detention facility on $750,000 bond. Local officers are not the only ones investigating the incident. TheU.S. Department of Defensealso wants some answers.
