S.C. Shoppers Stock Up On Savings With Sales Tax Holiday

For businesses, it is like Christmas Eve. For shoppers, it is a bargain hunter's dream come true. South Carolina's no sales tax holiday has local retail stores bustling with customers and shoppers ready to take full advantage.

For Marvin McNeil and his family, every little penny counts.

"I have five girls and I have a set of triplets. I have a 14-year-old and a 23-year-old," McNeil says. "I saved about $50, $60 today shopping."

Arneatha German had a late start on Friday's shopping spree.

"Shopping back to school with a little savings on the tax," German says. "We're just getting out and missed all the fun today."

Back to school supplies are not the only things shoppers are stocking up on. The no sales tax holiday also applies to computers printers and computer software.

Although the shoppers were were ready for the sales tax holiday, the businesses were not. Clerks had to subtract the 5 percent sales tax on several items by hand because the registers were not set up to handle the discount.
