City leaders met for more than eight hours Tuesday with the attorneys of four former Fayetteville police officers. The officers filed racial discrimination complaints in 1996.
After a daylong mediation session, both sides could not settle on an agreement, which means the case could go to trial.
"This whole mediation process was my idea because I thought it would give everybody an opportunity to come to the table and talk but it didn't work out that way," says councilmember Marshall B. Pitts. "We didn't reach a consensus -- a middle ground. I was very much disappointed."
Pitts says the city has already spent more than $300,000 defending the discrimination lawsuits.
