Tips Abound in Cary Bank Robbery, Shooting

A 51-year-old woman, who hasn't yet been identified, was making a deposit in the after-hours depository slot at the Bank of America branch at 801 SE Maynard Road, near Cary Towne Center, at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday when she was approached by a man, police said.

The man grabbed a bag of money and shot the woman in the stomach, police said. Two of the woman's co-workers were present at the time of the shooting, but they weren't injured, police said.

After the shooting, the man ran across the street and got into a red sedan driven by a white man, police said. The sedan had a New York license plate, police said.

"It is a pretty brazen crime, and we're very concerned about the victim and any of our citizens. We want to make sure we do anything we can to get this person off the street," said Capt David Wulff of the Cary Police Department. "This is really not typical for anywhere -- very bold, middle of the day on a busy day, just before the opening of a mall."

Wulff said investigators have received numerous tips in the case through the Crimestoppers hotline.

The woman was listed in stable condition at WakeMed Monday.

The gunman is described as a tall, skinny black man, believed to be in his early 30s with a short beard. Police said he was wearing black pants and a black shirt at the time of the shooting.

Police said both men are considered armed and dangerous.
