Experts Meet to Improve Hurricane Forecasting

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — The power, the fury and the cost. Between preparation and lost tourism dollars, every hurricane warning issued for North Carolina costs our state $260 million.

More accurate forecasts could not only save us money but, more important, save lives.

Monday in Raleigh, local and national weather experts gathered to discuss ways to improve hurricane tracking.

One sobering aspect to evacuating large areas is that it costs a million dollars a mile, a heavy decision to put on local officials.

Due to Hurricane Floyd, inland flooding is in the spotlight as the big problem.

The special frustration of Floyd was that the floods killed 50 people, nearly all of them after the storm had passed.

Even scientists agree: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
