Surratt's Feelings Bittersweet As He Goes West

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Dr. Jim Surratt, Wake County Public Schools superintendent, is packing up his office this week. He will start his new job in Texas next week.

Surratt says he is pleased that student skills and test scores are on the rise as well as teacher pay. He also cites that the new finance arrangement with the county better pays for operations. However, Surratt says he leaves with bittersweet feelings.

"I'm proud of the achievements the district has made. I'm happy about that," Surratt said Wednesday. "I'm going to miss many friends and so many people who have shown so many kindnesses to us on leaving."

Surratt's last day in the office will be Friday.

The Wake County School Board begins interviewing in-house candidates for Surratt's position Thursday afternoon.
