Franklin County Man Shot By Deputy

Posted Updated

FRANKLIN COUNTY — A woman harassed by an ex-boyfriend credits a deputy and a domestic violence worker with saving her life.

A deputy shot and killed Hubert O'Berry outside a subdivision in Franklin County Thursday morning. Authorities say O'Berry had been repeatedly harassing his ex-girlfriend who lived there.

O'Berry had accumulated 14 arrest warrants in the past couple of days. A deputy spotted O'Berry's truck at the ex-girlfriend's house at 1 a.m. Thursday.

"He immediately jumped out of his truck and charged toward the deputy," says Franklin County sheriff Robert Redmond. "In that process, the deputy lost his pistol that came out of his holster. Then it was a question of who could get the gun first."

O'Berry was shot in the stomach. He died on the way to the hospital. The deputy broke his thumb and injured his arm. The ex-girlfriend is OK but shaken.

Fortunately, she had called a domestic violence worker who urged her to stay away from home. She was not there when O'Berry showed up with a gun.
