Prosecutors Will Seek Death Penalty In Post Office Murder

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against the man accused of killing an N.C. State University researcher last month.

Jeff Cruden, an assistant district attorney in Wake County, said Tuesday that he would ask a jury to sentence Robert Avery, 29, to death if it convicts him.

Police say that Avery shot and killed Eric Bish, 30, at Raleigh's Method Road post office in May.

Bish was an extension and research associate in NCSU's horticulture department.

Avery is scheduled to go on trial in April 2001.
