The Western Wake Expressway is supposed to ease the flow of traffic from Holly Springs to Durham. The project will complete Raleigh's 71-mile Outer Loop.
State Department of Transportationleaders listened as people spoke out about the plans that could drive right through their backyard.
"This is going to be a stressful situation," says Wake County resident Eddie Jones. "It is not like you move to change jobs, you are being forced out of your homes."
The DOT has offered two alternative routes through the Apex area. Twenty-two homes are in the path of alignment A while 146 homes are in the path of alignment C.
"Our goal is to give people the opportunity to say what they need to say about their preferences for A or C," says DOT official Gail Grimes.
State leaders say they will decide which plan is best within the next three to six months. Construction will not start until after 2006.
