Thousands of Fish Found Dead At Indian Lake

Posted Updated

TARBORO — Park officials in Tarboro have a problem on their hands: 12,000 dead fish.

Ranger Ernest Pitts discovered the fish kill at Indian Lake Monday morning. Officials believe the hot weather and a broken aerator are to blame. A new aerator should arrive Wednesday, but until then, Pitts and some hired help worked to clean up the mess.

"We got some more kids coming in this evening to try to get more out if we can," Pitts says. "We've got a hole already dug where we've got to bury the fish after we get them out of here."

Thousands of fish have died in eastern North Carolina waterways during the last few days.
