HENDERSON — Money for cancer research was the main reason thousands of walkers and runners in Vance County hit the track this weekend.

The volunteers are rounding the track nonstop to raise money to find a cure for cancer.

TheVance County Relay for Lifeis only in its sixth year, but they have already hit the $1 million mark in fund-raising for theAmerican Cancer Society.

"For a county our size to be, not No. 1 in our district or No. 1 in the state, but No. 1 in the nation, that is pretty important to us and we are quite proud of that," says relay organizer Cliff Rogers.

This year's final amount will not be calculated until September because they will continue accepting donations throughout the summer.
