Crimestoppers Tip Leads to Arrest in Murder of 95-Year-Old Man

Posted Updated

DURHAM — A teenage suspect accused of killing a 95-year-old Durham man is now in custody and police say it is community involvement that led to the arrest.

Nineteen-year-old Jason Johnson made his first appearance Friday in a Durham County courtroom, charged with first degree murder in the death of Alton "Bob" Carson.

Last month, Carson disappeared from a Hardee's on Miami Boulevard, not far from his house. His car was found just a few blocks away. Carson's body was found nearby the next morning.

Investigators say catching Johnson was a top priority, and a break in the case came through a Crimestoppers tip.

Crimestoppers received more than 100 calls about the case and then, the one that paid off.

"The caller basically told us he was in the 300 block of Enterprise Street," says Lt. Eddie Sarvis.

"We felt he was extremely dangerous," Sarvis says. "We're thankful he's behind bars before he could hurt someone else."

Since 1983, Crimestoppers has helped solve more than 2,400 crimes.
