Cary Bans Automated Watering for Businesses, Non-Residential Customers

CARY — TheTown of Caryis revising itswatering restrictionsforbusinesses and other non-residential usersstarting Wednesday, June 14.

The new policy affects Cary, Apex and the Wake County portion of Research Triangle Park and prohibits businesses, apartment complexes and homeowners associations from doing automated watering with soaker hoses, sprinklers and irrigation systems.

Those users are still permitted to water by hand with hoses or cans on thealternate day schedule.

These new restrictions replace the plan voted on by Town Council members June 8, which would have prohibited only weekend watering for non-residential customers as of July 1.

The new restrictions are in effect until further notice.

The commercial restrictions do not affect residential customers in single family homes in Cary. Those users remain on the following watering schedule:

Mondays: No watering

Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays: Customers living in homes with odd-numbered street addresses

Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays: Customers living in homes with even-numbered street addressesResidential customers in Apex are now being asked to adopt Cary's alternate day watering schedule. In Apex, residential customers are also being asked to eliminate automated watering systems and only water by hand on the alternate day schedule.

Morrisville leaders are also discussing the possibility of watering restrictions.

Airport spokesman Mike Blanton says RDU International switched from its primary to its secondary water source Wednesday, at the request of Cary officials. Its primary source is Cary and its secondary -- and current -- source is Raleigh.

The Airport Authority will discuss a potentially permanent switch at its meeting Thursday, after receiving a report from the City of Raleigh.
