Soldiers Help Students Win in the Classroom

Posted Updated

BUNNLEVEL — Fort Bragg troops are helping students win the battle in classroom.

South Harnett Elementary was looking for volunteers to tutor students one-on-one, and members of the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment answered the call in force.

The school principal says the troops are credited with improving students' test scores and their classroom behavior.

"They've come and extended a helping hand and have told the kids there is hope," says principal Ken Jernigan. "With proper application of manners, character and applying themselves academically, then really anything can happen for them."

This year alone, soldiers have logged more than 1,500 hours at the school.

There are about 80 Fort Bragg units volunteering in the Harnett and Cumberland County school systems.
