RAEFORD, N.C. — A 10-year-old boy was killed Wednesday when he was thrown from a car in a wreck and the car landed on him after flipping over, authorities said.

Marcus Emmanuel, of Rennert, was riding in the back seat of a car driven by his uncle, Cliffton Emmanuel, when the elder Emmanuel tried to turn onto Shannon Road from N.C. Highway 211 south of Raeford, authorities said. A northbound van struck the back of the car, which rolled several times before ending up on top of the boy, authorities said.

Marcus Emmanuel was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, where he was pronounced dead.

Cliffton Emmanuel and another passenger, Russell Chavis, were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. The driver of the van, whose name wasn't released, was taken to Southeastern Medical Center in Lumberton for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Some beer was found on the back seat of Emmanuel's car, but authorities said they don't believe alcohol was a factor in the wreck.

Emmanuel was charged with failure to yield, authorities said. The accident remains under investigation, and more charges are possible, they said.
