His high school principal, Bill Williamson, cannot say enough about Dickerson.
"He's diligent, hard-working and caring," Williamson says. "He's a remarkable young man. I don't know too many people who would endure what he's been through."
Dickerson was diagnosed with kidney failure at 14. He had to be hooked up to a dialysis machine every night for two and a half years until he finally received a kidney last March.
The transplant surgery was a relief for his family, but three subsequent trips to the hospital and a recent hip injury were a bit trying for his mother, Pearl.
"He helped me. He just took it in stride and went on," she says.
Dickerson is going on, but he is not taking all of the credit.
"I had plenty of help from the staff here, friends and family," Dickerson says.
Dickerson graduated with honors from high school. He plans to go into the medical field. He says he wants to study radiology to help others the way he has been helped.
