Female Fort Bragg Soldiers "Jump" To Commemorate Women's History Month

Posted Updated

FORT BRAGG — Jumping out of planes used to be off-limits to women soldiers, but today's army is different.

To commemorate Women's History Month, 110 Fort Bragg soldiers took a jump Wednesday to celebrate their gender.

"Women's History Month has been great," says Fort Bragg soldier Cynthia Santana. "[This is] one of the best moments, and I'm happy to be a part of it. Thank God that I made it safely."

There are 20,000 18th Airborne Corps soldiers on jump status. Fifteen-hundred of them are women.

"Some units only have one or two females, so it gets them out with a mix of people to see all different ranks, all different levels," says Kimberly Colloton, Jump Master.

The women jumpers say their effort shows how female soldiers are an integral part of today's army.

"It's changing for the better," says Fort Bragg soldier Debbie James. "It's just a way for all of us to get together and say look how far it's come since 1970."

It was only appropriate that Mother Nature provided perfect weather conditions.

"This is awesome," says Fort Bragg soldier Anna Eubanks. "You couldn't ask for better weather."

After Wednesday's jump, the women reported no injuries. The only other all womens' jump was two decades ago.
