Edwin X. Black Called Murder Victim
HOPE MILLS, N.C. — Cumberland County sheriff's deputies Wednesday said they were questioning a suspect in an early morning death they said was a murder at a Hope Mills home.

Edwin X. Black, 41, of 508 Bramblegate Road was dead on the front steps of a home on Nashville Drive when deputies arrived about 4:30 a.m. after getting a call about a disturbance, the sheriff's office said.

Detectives said Black had been attacked by an assailant while Black slept on a sofa in the living room of the home at 4055 Nashville Drive. Another man who was also asleep in the living room told investigators that someone came to the door and woke up him and Black, deputies said.

A man who had come to the door began striking Black and an argument started, deputies said the witness told them. The witness, whom deputies did not identify, told them he ran to call for help and returned to find Black on the front porch and apparently hurt.

No charges had been filed in the case, officials said.
