Airman Struck By Falling Utility Pole In Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Two people were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center on Monday morning after an accident involving a Waste Management truck.

Owen Drive onto Boone Trail

. The truck struck a utility pole and then landed on its side. The utility pole struck a bystander in a restaurant parking lot.

The driver of the Waste Management truck, Tony James, 31, of Fayetteville, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A member of the U.S. Air Force, Gerald Winn Jr. was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was listed in critical condition Monday night.

No charges have been filed as the investigation is still ongoing, authorities said Monday night.

The intersection of Owen Drive and Boone Trail was closed for most of the day as crews repaired the pole and traffic lights.
